Why Your Articles Rank Poorly: Intent Mismatch
Source: the SEO Core Principles playbook
Symptoms you may be seeing
Check what matches — if more than half applies, this page is for you.
- Pages indexed but ranked beyond #50
- Page content doesn't match the keyword's search intent
- Top 10 for your keyword are all high-authority domains
- Repeatedly editing the same articles, hoping rankings recover
- No internal links pointing to priority pages
Why this happens:5 root causes
1. Format inconsistent with intent
Poor ranking usually is not "not well written" — it is format vs. perceived intent, like writing a tutorial for a commercial word.
Self-check: What format is the #1 result, and do you match it?
2. Unwinnable keyword authority
When the top 10 are authority sites, more words and rewrites change nothing — the keyword must be swapped.
Self-check: Is there any site in the top 10 at your scale?
3. Missing internal-link equity
Orphan pages receive no internal equity; priority pages need multiple internal links pointing in.
Self-check: How many of your pages link to this one?
4. Insufficient content coverage
Missing subtopics versus the top 10 signals low information value; padding word count does not add coverage.
Self-check: Compare subheadings with the top 10 — what is missing?
5. Giving up before the ranking window
Mid-competition words take 3-6 months to stabilize; frequent republishing and redirects reset the clock.
Self-check: How old is the page, and has the URL ever changed?

SEO Content Assets
Build a keyword pool and produce intent-matched content, turning traffic from event-driven into an asset.
Why this stage is prone to it
- Writing words you think matter without checking real search intent
- Expecting SEO to work in a month, then quitting by month two

Months of SEO with no traffic — what's actually wrong?
Usually wrong keyword selection and intent mismatch — you're writing the words that feel important to you. Re-screen keywords with the four filters (relevance/commercial intent/intent match/attackability), keep only 4 core words, and match content form to intent (Transactional→product page, Commercial→comparison piece, Informational→tutorial).
